The Wanaque Center Pediatric Unit is a skilled nursing center dedicated to
providing the specialized services needed by the children under our care.
The children at Wanaque Center range in age from birth to twenty-one years
of age. Each child is unique and, therefore, uniquely cared for by our staff.

We believe the children at Wanaque Center deserve our deepest respect as
well as the highest level of care possible. As a result, our experienced staff is
specially chosen to ensure that the care they are given is gentle, supportive
and individualized.

In addition, the Wanaque Center Pediatric Unit offers state-of-the-art
equipment and a staff that, through ongoing training and study, is able to
implement the best medical care available.
Caring for Children with special needs requires the highest level or professional skills combined with
love and tenderness. Our goal is to maximize the potential of every child in order to achieve the
highest quality of life possible for each youngster entrusted to our care.

Our care plan is based on a team approach. Each team member contributes to a coordinated
treatment plan based on the child's developmental, social and medical needs and status.

Our care teams include a related services staff consisting of physical, occupational, and speech
therapists to ensure that the children reach their fullest potential.

Other team Members to include:

  • Recreational therapists,
  • Social Services Professionals,
  • Registered and licensed practical nurses, and
  • certified nursing assistants.

State certified teachers, psychologists and staff and personal physicians are also part of our care
teams.
Working Together

By working together, caring parents and our skilled professionals can provide each child at Wanaque Center with
the best quality of life attainable.

Because we understand the difficultly parents face in making the decision to place their much loved child in a
controlled environment, our pediatric Social Workers can assist in coordinating therapeutic home visits as well as
discharge planning to other facilities or to home. They are also available to listen and respond to parents' concerns,
which is particularly important during the stressful transition period.

Wanaque Center's Pediatric Unit would welcome the opportunity to introduce you to our staff and provided a tour
of our cheerful, child-oriented wing. To arrange for a tour or for additional information, please call our Director of
Admissions at 973-839-2119
Life at Wanaque Center

Our concern for the children living at Wanaque Center's Pediatric unit encompasses much more than the medical
care prescribed  for each. Wanaque Center's Pediatric Unit provides specially designed programs for our young
residents throughout the year.

For instance, classrooms are staffed by certified teachers of the handicapped, provided by the State of New
Jersey. A multisensory approach to learning is delivered through an interdisciplinary/functional model. Early
intervention services for children less than three years of age are also provided in the Unit.

Even therapy can be fun here: we have regular pet therapy sessions with loving and gentle pets owned by staff
members. The children love this program!

Geriatric residents from another unit at Wanaque Center enthusiastically take part in our Adopt-a-Grandchild
program. These two units were made for each other: the children benefit from the love and attention no matter
what their medical status, and our elderly residents embrace the opportunity to act like "grandparents".

Volunteers join us on a daily basis and often provide extra "cuddle" sessions for children. Our activities staff
provides special events throughout the year, making sure that our youthful residents experience and celebrate
holidays, birthdays, and the changing seasons.
Specialized Pediatric Services

Ventilator Program

Wanaque Center's pediatric ventilator unit accepts children with any disorder producing ventilator dysfunction.
Our licensed Respiratory Care Practitioners maintain proper ventilatory function. They are under the direct medical
supervision of a board-certified plumonologist/intensitvist.

Our portable ventilators are self-contained, time cycled and volume limited; they require supplemental oxygen as
ordered and regulated. Arterial oxygen and carbon dioxide levels are determined by both invasive and non-invasive
techniques. Specific procedures are used to monitor the effectiveness of ventilation.

Our goal is to establish an environment conducive with home life.
